The 8,000-page journal Philip K. Dick kept after his visions of February–March 1974, in which he concluded that “the Empire never ended”: Rome persists as the “Black Iron Prison”, and Holy Wisdom (Sophia) is held captive inside it. These ideas fed into VALIS (1981).
